Yeah, I think it was more for the support for the crew and not just a "here take my money" ordeal. I heard lots of Japanese players like the game as well. It's only controversial because it raised the amount of money and beyond, in a short amount of time AND in that specific kick starter website.
I do think it is expensive for a single character, they should just add the trumpet looking character in the mix since they raised more than enough.
But yes, a game developers life is rough!

I wouldn't say they have more than enough for Big Band though. Keep in mind that they are outsourcing some of the workload too. Their salary is only 3 bucks above minimum wage lol
